Not long ago, I had an “impossible” dream to inspire millions for many of people. I had lost my cousin to homophobia when we were both in our twenties. Suicide has long been a problem for youth in the community, and in my grief, I vowed to make a difference. Over the years, I volunteered thousands of hours to the community in my own area. Then I joined facebook, and got an idea.
I dreamed of creating a huge group like Pride Worldwide Online. A place where people could go for support, fun and a sense of belonging. Everywhere, year round, people could go to this place to enjoy thousand of photos, discussions and videos from all over the world. A place for one global community, united. A place where an isolated gay youth could find encouragement. A place where a bullied bi or trans youth could find self-esteem.
A place to save lives. Sixteen times, I tried and failed to create this place. Sixteen times, I learned something about social media and motivation. People laughed at my dream and said it was crazy… until this past February. Then, they suddenly stopped laughing.

Yes, You, Too, Can Inspire Millions
“Two million people! How did you do it?” People keep asking me. There are ten secret strategies I discovered (often through trial and error) in my quest to unite the gay-friendly community on facebook. Now, I coach leaders and entrepreneurs to use the same secrets I did in order to make a difference and/or make a living doing what they love. You, too, can use these strategies to create a snowball effect and get your message out to the world. Here’s the first strategy…
Choose a specific audience you know and love.
Choosing a specific audience is not easy. The most common mistake people make in social media is to try to be all things to all people. We mistakenly believe that generic messages will attract a larger audience. I made that mistake, too, at first. I created my first facebook group for everyone and anyone, and it attracted only five people. Then I started creating groups specifically for the LGBT community. Soon, my LGBT groups began attracting hundreds, then thousands, then millions. Now, I am focusing on attracting an even more specific audience: gay-friendly leaders (speakers, politicians, entertainers, executives, and entrepreneurs). Laser beams are powerful because they are focussed. We, too, are powerful when we focus.
If you’d like to attract millions to your online campaign, ask yourself who exactly you want to attract. Are they in a specific location, demographic, job, industry, or life situation? Do they share a passion for a common cause or interest? It’s all about focusing. That way, people feel a sense of belonging to the group. They also feel a connection to you and your message whenyou are addressing their specific interests.
Life is short, so choose an audience that you know and love. For example, I know and love the LGBT community well because I’ve been a member for fifteen years, and donated thousands of hours contributing to numerous LGBT causes.
To create a snowball effect, ask yourself honestly if you really know and love your chosen audience. If not, I suggest you quickly go out and make new friends in this group. Team up with someone who does know and love them well, or, if at all possible, switch to a different audience altogether. People can easily sense if you understand and care about them or not.

Join us for this three-week course beginning in January 2011. Choose classes on
a) Tuesdays 8 p.m. Eastern standard Time (Jan. 11, 18 & 25), or
b) Saturday afternoon at 4 p.m. Eastern standard Time. (Jan. 15, 22 &29) Each telephone class lasts an hour.
