Hi, Dad,
Here are the links to my videos to help save lives of bullied gay & LGBT youth. My goal is to give them a sense of belonging, self-esteem, and support.* http://www.outstandinglives.org/marriage-pride.html And the other one is http://www.outstandinglives.org/confidence-program.html . For my birthday, I’d love you & Mom to tell me one thing (or more) that you liked about each of them. * Gay youth are naturally gay, just like you are naturally left-handed and Mom naturally enjoys shellfish. Sure, there are lots of people who think homosexuality, left-handedness and eating shellfish are clearly wrong, according to the Bible. Many religious people would punish us all to try to get us to change our ways. I support your right to live and be yourself, no matter what those fundamentalist religious people say! Some day, I hope that you support my right to live and be myself, too. A GREAT Dream benefits you, other people and the planet. For example, I had a GREAT dream to inspire pride and save lives of bullied LGBT youth by attracting over 1,000,000 people to a gay-friendly social network. Seventeen times, I failed. On the eighteenth time, we reached over two million people.

Thanks! You're OUTstanding. Even though your bible clearly says it's wrong to eat shellfish, Mom, I support your right to follow your heart. I know you love to eat shellfish. I remember watching you scooping out those poor little oysters, smothering them with sauce, sticking them on crackers and moaning in ecstacy. Not my thing, to be honest. As a vegetarian, I found it a little gross. But hey, I'm very open-minded. Live and let live, I say. Do what you want, as long as you're not hurting anyone. I love you and I want you to be happy. Something tells me God loves you and wants you to be happy, too. My religion is love. Even though your bible clearly says it's an abomination (Leviticus 11:12 says "Whatever has no fins nor scales in the waters, that shall be an abomination to you."), I fully support your right to eat shellfish. Some day, I also hope you'll support my right to same-sex marriage. I'd appreciate it.
Love, Sharon P.S. In fact, I hope you'll dance at my wedding once I meet & marry Ms. Right. The question: "Can Girls Marry Girls and Can Boys Marry Boys?" It's 1973. I'm debating with two other five-year-olds on the sidewalk. I'm thinking, "this feels really important", but I don't know why... Finally, after much lively discussion, we conclude that yes, girls CAN marry girls and boys CAN marry boys. Here's why (get this logic)...Wilma is married to Betty and Fred is married to Barney. As kids, we think marriage is about friendship. Caring. Emotional intimacy. Doing things together. It's not about what's on a piece of paper. It's about what's in the heart. We know who cares about whom on the Flintstones, and we know who is really, emotionally, married to whom. Wilma & Betty. Married. Fred & Barney. Same-sex couple. Simple. Clear. Of course we can have same-sex marriage. Aren't most best friends of the same sex? Yes, they love each other. Love is love. Marriage is about love. So of couse, everyone can marry. Simple. Reflecting back, I wonder... what if we all had the deep insight of five-year-olds? What if we all looked to our hearts for answers? What if we all said "yes" to love? I also can't help but wonder... Who knew that Fred Flintstone was a gay icon!? ; ) Love, xo Sharon The first time I hear the term lesbian, I'm probably about five years old. I ask, "I know a Leslie. I know an Anne... but why are so many women called Lesbi-Anne? Why do they all have the same name?" I still wonder that sometimes. Lipstick lesbians. Stone butches. Soccer moms. Authors. Dykes on bikes. Herbie dykes. CEOs. Sports babes. Computer babes. Rock stars. Prime Ministers. Presidents. Okay, maybe the "Prime Ministers & Presidents" part still needs a little work. I have a dream! Why DO we all have the same name? The one thing that unites us is a love of women. To all my sister Lesbi-Annes, I'm proud to be Sharin' the name with you. ; ) Love, Sharon xo |
